Government land release provides more housing opportunities in WA

First homebuyers and families were the winners in the latest release of residential lots in South Hedland, WA.

Housing and Works Minister Michelle Roberts said seven sites, which could provide 31 new homes, were made available through the State Government’s South Hedland New Living Project.

“One of the main aims of the South Hedland New Living Project is to assist first homebuyers and encourage families to live in the Pilbara,” Mrs Roberts said.

“Three single residential lots were offered for sale for $100,000 by public ballot, which included a $7,000 landscaping and fencing incentive.”

“The release of these affordable lots targeted local families.”

Of the seven sites offered for sale, three were single residential lots that were bought by first homebuyers and an owner-occupier, while the remaining sites, which can support 28 properties, were sold by auction.

The large single residential lots are zoned R20 and are located on Rutherford Road and Haines Road in South Hedland.

Mrs Roberts said the ballot system aimed to ensure that investors did not ramp up local land prices.

“In a region where developers’ interest is strong, we need to put in place safeguards so locals are able to realise their dreams of homeownership,” she said.

Mrs Roberts said that the four groupsites, sold by auction, could provide 28 more homes in the area.

“The lots were sold very quickly for between $310,000 - $570,000, highlighting the demands for housing being driven by the mining activity in the Pilbara,” Mrs Roberts said.

“The availability of affordable land and housing is central to the long-term future of this important Pilbara community.”

The four Group sites are located on Collier Drive, Masters Way, Wangara Crescent and Souey Court and range in size from 1,578 to 3,415 square metres.

Mrs Roberts said that more affordable land would be released in the coming months.
