How green is your thumb? Sydney Garden Competition 2007

Sydneysiders with green thumbs are invited to enter the City of Sydney's fourth annual Garden Competition.

“Gardens contribute to beautiful streetscapes, provide enjoyment for owners and the wider community, and create a more sustainable environment in our urban villages,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said.

“The City of Sydney has committed to improving the amount and quality of green space within the Local Government Area.

“Private and community gardens are a major addition to the green space in our City, and our annual Garden Competition celebrates the efforts made by our local green thumbs,” Ms Moore said.

Garden owners can enter into six categories including the popular ‘Best Sustainable Garden’ category which has doubled in popularity over the past two years.

“The popularity of our sustainable garden category reflects the growing awareness and concern for our environment,” Ms Moore said.

A sustainable garden is easily accessible to many residents with balconies instead of backyards, with drought-tolerant natives, succulent plants and cacti widely available.

During last year's competition more than 100 entries competed for prizes in seven categories, including ‘Best Overall Entry.’ There are also two new prizes this year - the ‘Encouragement Award’ and ‘People's Choice Award.’

Last year's overall winner, John Williams of Glebe, was thrilled to win on his first attempt.

“It was completely unexpected and a terrific thrill to win the competition. It's lovely having a garden living in the City. My advice to this year's entrants is to just get weeding, don't leave it up to the last minute. I've certainly been working on our garden.” Mr Williams said.

Entries are open until 27 August, judging will occur in September after which a special prize presentation, hosted by Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP, will take place on 31 October. The competition is open to all residents within the City of Sydney Local Government Area. Winners will share in a prize pool of $20,000 of which more than half is funded by an $11,500 bequest.
