$200 000 Heritage Grants Up For Grabs in NT

Territorians have the opportunity to apply for $200,000 worth of Heritage Grants as part of the NT Government’s funding program designed to protect heritage-listed sites.

Northern Territory Environment and Heritage Minister Marion Scrymgour has announced the opening of the Heritage Grants.

Ms Scrymgour used one of Darwin’s heritage listed buildings – the Christ Church Anglican Cathedral – which last year received $15 000 to repair a stainglass window – to illustrate the importance of the grants.

“Our heritage sites not only define our unique Territory identity, but are a major drawcard for tourists who come to the Northern Territory,” Ms Scrymgour said.

“Each year the NT Government makes $1 million available to Government-owned heritage sites, but we also provide $200,000 every year for the repairs and maintenance of privately owned heritage sites.”

Ms Scrymgour said the opening of the grants was not only great news for the Territory’s heritage sites, but also for local contractors.

“This means more jobs and dollars in the pocket for our local contractors,” Ms Scrymgour said.

Ms Scrymgour said the Christ Church Cathedral received more than $13 000 to seal and repaint the roof in 04/05 and then $15 000 last year for window repairs.

“The church is a landmark structure and is closely associated with some key events and phases in the history of Darwin,” Ms Scrymgour said.

“The ruins of the old Church serve as a reminder of the destruction of Cyclone Tracy in 1974, when the Church was all but destroyed, leaving only the porch, and part of the front wall of the original 1902 building behind.

“The new Cathedral is symbolic of the determination to rebuild after Cyclone Tracy. It is a good example of the types of Church designs produced in Australia in the 1970s”.
