Latest Housing Research Helps Plan For The Future

A Northern Territory Government funded report that identifies levers to create affordable housing in the Northern Territory has been released by NT Shelter.

Housing Minister Elliot McAdam said the report recommendations will be used to help shape future housing plans for the Territory.

“Housing affordability is a national issue and the Territory Government is developing a framework to address it locally,” said Mr McAdam.

“The Territory economy has experienced solid growth over the past few years and this has contributed to a strong housing market.

“Darwin is still the second most affordable capital city in Australia, but country-wide there have been new challenges to ensuring low income earners and first home buyers have affordable housing options.

“The Federal Government has done little to address this issue and they need to increase funding commitments under a new Commonwealth State Housing Agreement.

“Territory Housing is currently developing a new framework that looks at range of issues including affordability, public housing and home ownership.

“The report will contribute to the formulation of the new housing framework and I thank NT Shelter and SGS Economics and Planning for their good work.

“We already have some terrific housing initiatives here in the Territory, such as HomeNorth, which is recognised as one of the best home ownership schemes in Australia.

“HomeNorth has helped almost 1,000 Territorians purchase their own home since July 2004.

“Affordable housing has no simple answer, but the findings of today’s report will help contribute to creating future housing initiatives,” said Mr McAdam.
