Affordable Housing Concepts, Strategies and Models

January 2007

The Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute is offering a course to learn about affordable housing concepts, from planning to production. This course is in February at the University of Sydney, and combines resources from the faculty of Architecture there, and the AHURI. The course is for housing and planning professionals, but if you are a proficient owner builder, and want to learn more about affordable housing, then contact the course organisers to determine your suitability for the course.

Using seminars, workshops and demonstration projects, the course will provide a conceptual and practical foundation for people involved in the brokerage, financing, planning, procurement and/or delivery of new models of affordable housing.

Date(s): 12 Feb 2007 - 16 Feb 2007

Location: University of Sydney

Attendees: Housing and planning professionals

A joint initiative between the AHURI Sydney Research Centre and the Faculty of Architecture, the professional development course will provide a conceptual and practical foundation for people involved in the brokerage, financing, planning, procurement and/or delivery of new models of affordable housing, including both rental and ownership options.

Presenters will include Dr Vivienne Milligan, Dr Nicole Gurran and Professor Peter Phibbs and several professionals involved in the financing, development and management of affordable housing projects.

A visit to affordable housing projects and agencies in Sydney is included. Participants will help to develop a concept plan and risk management strategy for the provision of affordable housing on an identified site in inner Sydney.

Aims

The main aims of the course are to:

  • Convey an understanding of affordable housing concepts and issues;
  • Provide up to date knowledge of affordable housing policies and strategies in Australia and internationally;
  • Analyse and compare models of affordable housing provision; and
  • Provide participants with the necessary skills and resources to develop affordable housing strategies and projects.

During the course, participants will also be introduced to public policy makers and affordable housing providers, and will work in small teams on a specific development opportunity with local professionals who are actively involved in affordable housing developments.

There will also be an introductory Bridging Session on the morning of Monday February 12, for people without a background in the housing policy context for affordable housing.
