Is there a way to stop crack appearing in rendered walls?

Print-friendly Version

Question

We had removed all the ceilings & the render off the walls, around the windows and doors reveal some less then 5mm wide crack along the mortar on the brick wall. The builder said they are caused by the roots of the trees and the draught. Is there any way we could prepare the wall before rendering, so the cracks don't show again? Some suggest to cover up the crack with gyprock and make it easy for wiring. Which is best?

Answer

Your house will forever move and crack due to inevitable ground movement. Gyprock on the walls is the best option due the fact that wall behind can shift a little, whilst the gyprock has a tendency to stay intact, hiding cracks that would normally appear through render.
