ACT Sustainable homes helping to tackle climate change recognised at HIA Awards

November 2006

ACT Planning and Land Authority Chief Planning Executive Neil Savery has congratulated Village Building Company, Renaissance Building Design and Oztal Architects who are the joint winners of the Authority sponsored Quality Urban Design and Sustainability Award at the 2006 HIA ACT & Southern NSW Housing Awards. Mr Savery said the winning entry of The Shores development in Beissel Street Belconnen, demonstrated superior urban design and sustainability through careful planning and construction.

“The Shores development demonstrated an excellent use of site analysis, sustainable housing principles and consultation with local authorities and the local community.”

Mr Savery commended all the entrants for the awards on their achievements and said that this award helps promote quality urban design and sustainability in the housing industry.

“It is no secret that the world must face up to a challenge like no other.

“Climate change brings into focus the stark choices we must face as regulators, administrators, investors, consumers, developers, etc. That is, that unless we tackle the influences of climate change head-on and together, we face the prospect that our current economic paradigm will become irrelevant.

“Designing more sustainable buildings and, in turn, celebrating them through awards such as this, is one contribution that can be made not only to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also ensure buildings are more capable of adapting to future climate conditions.

“The principles of quality urban design and sustainability are fast becoming the standard for our built environment and community expectations will continue to rise.

“As education is a key tool in changing attitudes and behaviours, the HIA Awards provides an important means to demonstrate the innovation and quality in the home building and renovation industry,” Mr Savery said.
