Major ACT Architecture Award won by Reid House

July 2006

The Canberra Medallion is the most prestigious recognition of excellence in the Canberra architectural profession. At the 2006 ACT Architecture Awards conducted annually by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (ACT Chapter), this top award was won by a beautifully and tastefully designed house in suburban Reid - the Reid House (pictured), designed by well known and noted Canberra architect Roger Pegrum.

In announcing the award, RAIA National President Carey Lyon said that Reid house was an outstanding example of urban domestic architecture.

“[Reid House] is a thoughtfully planned and beautifully detailed addition to city edge housing,” he said. Mr Lyon commented on the reason for winning the Medallion.

“The architect’s disciplined approach to the realisation of a dramatic new dwelling, while acknowledging the character and existing fabric of the neighbourhood.”

Other major award winners were the Pavilion at the ACT Garden of Remembrance for the Office of Australian War Graves at Woden Cemetery, by noted architect Philip Leeson, which won the award for Art and Architecture.

The National Capital Authority (NCA) scooped the pool with one award and two commendations. The NCA redevelopment of the Old Parliament House Gardens took out the Heritage Award, while it also received commendations for the refurbishment of the National Carillon and the construction of the Commonwealth Place Foreshore and Jetties.

The other major award went to 8 Brindabella Circuit in the category of Sustainable Architecture, designed by Daryl Jackson Alastair Swayn Architects to meet the requirements of 5 Star Green Star rating. This amazing addition to Brindabella Park has set a benchmark in environmental sustainability which will be the standard for the future.
