Compare Energy Product Ratings

by Megan Macpherson

Sometime in the future, everyone will have to buy new household appliances, electronic equipment, or office equipment. There are so many different products on the market, how do you decide which one to buy? All the energy rating systems are so confusing, sometimes it’s too difficult to figure out how to be environmentally friendly. However, there are two websites which allow you to compare the energy efficiency of different products, before you hit the shops.

Energy All Stars ( is supported by the National Appliance and Equipment Energy Efficiency Committee, which is responsible for the star energy rating systems. The website lists the top products to buy, and compares them in terms of energy efficiency. This is done for each category of household, office, commercial and electronics products, as the energy rating systems are different for each. Energy All Stars compares the 15-25% most energy efficient products in each category. The criteria used to rate the products is nation wide, and supported by the various related industries. The criteria includes being defined as “high efficiency,” have the top 10-15% star rating, and follow other international standards criteria and criteria developed through Australian and International research.

The Energy All Stars website however, only deals with the top products on the market. If you want to find out about all the products that meet Australian Energy Standards, there is a different website to visit, the energy rating website, This deals with all the products, so if the top energy products are out of your budget or unobtainable, then you can still see what the next best product is.

Over the next ten years there are many rules and regulations coming into effect about environmentally sustainable products, building, construction, and renovations. Conserving energy, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions are two issues starting to appear on Government agendas, hence websites such as these are becoming relevant. Buying energy efficient products is a personal choice, but one which will save you money in electricity bills in the long term, as well as helping to save the environment.
