How can I learn how to do my own tiling repairs?

Print-friendly Version

Question

I bought my apartment brand new but when I moved in found that the floor tiling in one of the bathrooms was very badly done. The dark brown tiles were stained by what looks like grout or white paint. The grout is crumbling and it just generally looks very unsightly. I have tried getting Multiplex to fix the problem but after a number inspections and cancelled appointments by the tiler a year on the problem is still not fixed. I am also very wary that they may make the problem worse.

I am considering fixing the problem myself but don't know the first thing about tiling! I am looking to do a course but can't find any in Sydney. Is there any advice you can offer me?

Answer

The first thing you should look at is our How To guides in the Tiling section. If you feel you still need more help, then you might want to call the St George & Sutherland Community College (127-129 Sutherland Road, Jannali Phone (02) 9528 3344). They are offering a relatively short course on wall & floor tiling that, as well as other topics, includes carrying out grouting work.

According to their site, the cost of the course is $170.50 and is stretched over 8 sessions of 2.5 hours each.
