Making new render match old

Print-friendly Version

Question

We have removed some garden beds and need to render the wall there to match up with the existing render. How do we ensure a good finish so that it matches in with the existing render and there are no lines shown? Are there any techniques to use where the joins of the old and new render are?

Answer

It would be useful to cut the existing render in a straight line and ideally at the damp proof course (DPC) line. Render should never bridge the DPC, that is, the render above the DPC and the render below should be separated so if there needs to be a joint between old and new render, allow it to be at this location. In other areas, if youre marrying old render to new, again the best method is to cut the old as straight as possible and to abut the new to it. Good quality exterior paint will further disguise this line
