White powder on brick surfaces

Print-friendly Version

There's a white powder coming out on the surface of our brick walls. What is the solution?

This is quite normal. It is known as efflorescence and is a crystaline deposit of soluble salts. It rises to the surface as bricks dry out. It can be white, yellow, green or brown.

Simply remove using a stiff straw or nylon brush. Don't hose down as the water will only dissolve the salts back into the bricks. Don't be alarmed if it returns, just brush off again.
