Windows for a Harsh Environment

by Brooke Olive

Australia has one of the harshest environments in the world. For this reason many people renovating attempt to incorporate more energy efficient and environmentally friendly ideas into their home during a renovation.

Being both kind on the pocket and the environment doesnt mean a window or its treatments should look drab.

Louvres are back, letting houses stay naturally cool and giving control over the amount of light that comes into your home. With many ways to be applied, such as bi-fold doors or fixed frames in or outside the home, louvre or jalousie windows are a lasting choice and are sure to add value to your home.

Another efficient yet beautiful feature window choice is the sky light. Offering natural lighting for a dark passage or room, a skylight is an alternative energy source that can be installed within a few hours. They can also be custom made to suit an individuals tastes or a certain room.

Another fantastic idea is installing a rotating window. This window works by pivoting around a central point. Allowing good ventilation and being able to swing three hundred and sixty degrees they are exceptionally easy to clean and can also benefit from having a reflective coating. This allows for the light to be reflected in or out depending on the season.

A safer idea for families is the awning window. Also called a hopper window they can swing open but are hinged either at the top or bottom rather than the side. They are easy to clean and ensure your familys security because of the locks positioning.

These are a few of the wonderfully simple ideas that can be applied when installing a different or unusual window. The main point is that the window suits the style of the room and the owners individual tastes.
